Editing your Website in a Box

All you need to do is login . If you're on a public terminal, select the "public terminal" box which will log you out 10 minutes after the last page access. If this is not checked you will stay logged in effectively indefinitely so only do this on your own user account on your own computer.

The link to the login is on the front page in the footer for the site.

Getting started

WIAB stores data the same way a hierarchy of folders is stored on your computer. A typical project layout might look something like this:

* People
** Fred
** Wilma
*** Pebbles
** Barney
** Betty
* Projects
** Quarry
** Housework
** Dinosaurs
* Publications
** Media
** Academic
** etc

Go to the login page to start. The default username and password is "test" for both. You need to create a new user, log out, log in as the new user and delete the test user before you go any further.

You can now add new users (who in turn can add new users).

The "Admin" menu.

You might not see the "Admin" menu straight away. Hit the reload button if you don't (yes, this is a bug). You will see links to the following (or you got your password wrong and you need to log in again):

  • Edit this page
  • New page
  • User admin
  • Logout

Edit this page

There are two text input boxes on this page. One for the text you want for the link to be (i,e,"this page":/content/Editing") and a bigger one for the text. We recommend that you start each page off with a top level heading:

h1.

WIAB understands this and creates a page title (the title of the browser window) from this.

Text formatting is in Textile markup, and basic instructions are given in the right hand side bar of the page. To get an idea of how this works, you can also edit these help pages which have been written with WIAB.

New page

When you click on the new page link you provide the link text as for the "Edit" link. You are also asked whether you want to add a new page as a sub-page of the current level (the default) or as a new page on the same level. This determines where the new page sits in the directory hierachy.

User admin

Here you can change your password, add new users and delete users. Everyone has the same access to this (but you can't change other users' passwords). This is deliberate.

Logout

If you're on a shared computer, you will want to use the logout when you've finished. This is a particularly good idea when you're using a public computer.
